It is humbling to think about the power of the mind and of mindful intention. At the end of the fourth mindfulness session held on Monday we were just sat around chatting after the loving kindness and compassion meditation and Sue (not her real name) revealed to us the difference the sessions, and daily practice, had made for her. The picture above captures perfectly the metaphor she used, a metaphor that emerged for her during the meditation:

“I could see a ring of dark clouds around my shoulders”, she said, “and I could feel the weight of them on my shoulders, but my head was above the clouds and the sky all around me was blue. It made everything feel lighter. People have noticed the difference in me, they tell me I look well. And I feel better, I’m feeling well.”

We will be meeting again for the next two Mondays and then not again until April. If you are interested in joining us keep an eye on the events page or register for my newsletter, if you are not already on the list.

For now I will leave you with the mantras we used during the meditation:

Loving-kindness and compassion starts first with the self. As human beings we find it difficult to give love if we cannot give it to ourselves.

"May I be happy. May I be well. may I be safe. may I be peaceful and at ease."

It is then extended to others who have cared for us and for whom we give thanks.

"May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be peaceful and at ease."

And then to those with whom we have difficulty.

"May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be peaceful and at ease."

Next week will be a piece on the science behind meditation.
